A new computer is exciting right up until you realise the photos, the passwords and that one spreadsheet are still on the old one. Here's what to move, and in what order.
Before you start
Don't wipe or give away the old computer yet. Keep it exactly as it is until you've used the new one for a week and haven't gone looking for anything.
What to move
- Documents, Desktop and Downloads. The obvious ones, and the Desktop is where a lot of important files live without anyone noticing.
- Photos and videos. Often the biggest folder and the most irreplaceable.
- Browser bookmarks and saved passwords. Signing in to the same browser account on the new computer usually brings these across.
- Email. If it's webmail, nothing to move. If you use a mail program, the mail and contacts may live on the computer itself.
- Programs. Make a list of what you use. Most need reinstalling rather than copying, and some need a licence key.
Then back it up
Moving computers is the perfect time to set up a backup: an external drive, a cloud service, or both. A backup that runs on its own is the one that's there when you need it.
